Cost, money, shipping, materials...the things we have to pay for. Let's get this conversation out of the way. As a professional quilter and person that makes pre-pieced blocks and tops, I hear this statement quite often. "I can do that cheaper.” I try to never be snarky with anyone, but at times I want to retort with, "Yeah, I bet you can.” So for the sake of being kind, I thought I'd offer a quick and simple breakdown. I won't make it long or boring. I consider it to be a teaching moment. A queen sized quilt measures on the average of 90 x 108, a little more or a little less. The quilt top (not quilted) shown below costs about $175 when you purchase it from Quilter's Imagination. A quilt top of this size takes about 7.5 yards of fabric to make. Quilt shop quality fabrics run anywhere from $9 to $12 per yard on average. You are already close to half of the cost we charge. This doesn’t count the amount of time you have to spend picking out the variety of fabrics you need. You will also need a ruler, cutting mat, thread, and rotary cutter. You may want to just try scissors, but I don't recommend it. LOL
